TL;DR

  • Choose Ahrefs if competitor research and backlink data shape your content plan. Its index is far larger, with 35 trillion backlink records to SE Ranking’s 2.9 trillion.
  • Choose SE Ranking if you need daily rank tracking and more seats for less. Its $129 Core plan tracks 2,000 keywords daily, while Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 weekly by default.
  • For a three-person team tracking 2,000 keywords, SE Ranking starts at about $161 a month and Ahrefs Standard costs $369 (as of October 2026).
  • SE Ranking Core now includes 100 AI prompts tracked daily, while Ahrefs Lite includes 5. For more, SE Ranking’s AI Search add-on starts at $89 a month and Ahrefs Brand Radar AI at $199.

Your Ahrefs renewal is two weeks out. Finance wants to know why three logins cost more than $350 a month, and someone on your team has already dropped an SE Ranking link in Slack with a note that says “same thing, half the price?”

It’s close to the same thing, with a few differences that decide which one fits your team. SE Ranking gives you more tracked keywords, daily rank updates, and much cheaper seats. Ahrefs gives you a far larger backlink and keyword index, along with the deeper competitor research that plenty of content strategies are built on.

So the choice comes down to two questions. How much of your content plan depends on competitor link and keyword data? And how many people need their own login and fresh ranking numbers every morning?

This comparison answers both, with current pricing, a feature-by-feature breakdown, what reviewers complain about, and what each tool costs for a real content team. Every price comes from the vendor’s own pricing page as of October 2026.

How I compared SE Ranking and Ahrefs

I use SE Ranking to track my own site, though I use Ahrefs more often, so I’ve spent time in both. For current prices, plan limits, and data figures, I checked each vendor’s pricing pages and documentation in September 2026 and re-checked prices in October 2026, and I read reviews on Capterra and Trustpilot to see where users disagree with the marketing.

Here’s how the two tools compare on the points content teams usually ask about first.

Put simply, Ahrefs wins on data depth, and SE Ranking wins on how much you get for each dollar. The rest of this comparison is detail on those two points, so you can judge which one your team would notice more.

What is SE Ranking?

SE Ranking is an all-in-one SEO platform with keyword research, competitor research, backlink analysis, site audits, rank tracking, and content tools in one account. Rank tracking is its strongest module, and it’s the feature reviewers praise most consistently.

The Rank Tracker checks Google, Bing, Yahoo, and YouTube every day on desktop and mobile. You can track by country, city, or ZIP code, and it monitors more than 35 SERP features. Around it sit Keyword Research, Competitive Research, a Backlink Checker with a separate Backlink Monitor, Website Audit, an On-Page SEO Checker, and a content marketing module that’s included on every plan.

SE Ranking also sells add-ons for specific teams. The AI Search add-on tracks your brand across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, and it includes SE Visible, a dashboard for brand mentions, citations, and sentiment. Agencies and consultants can add the Agency Pack, which covers white-label reporting and 30 client seats for $69 a month on annual billing.

Choose SE Ranking when you need reliable all-round SEO data for a small team, want daily rankings on a lot of keywords, and would rather spend the savings on content than on seats.

Pros

  • Tracks 2,000 keywords daily on the $129 Core plan
  • Extra seats start at $16 a month
  • Content marketing tools come with every plan
  • Annual billing saves 20%, which brings Core down to $103.20 a month

Cons

  • A smaller backlink and keyword index than Ahrefs
  • Core keeps only six months of historical data
  • Tracking more than 100 AI prompts costs $89 a month extra
  • Some reviewers report price increases and plan changes at renewal

What is Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is an SEO research platform best known for its backlink index. Site Explorer shows any domain’s backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords, and top pages, while Keywords Explorer draws on a database of 28.7 billion filtered keywords across 217 locations, by Ahrefs’ count. Site Audit, Rank Tracker, and Content Explorer round out the core toolset.

Ahrefs has also added AI search features on top of that data. Brand Radar tracks brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Copilot, and Claude, using an AI Visibility Index of more than 449 million prompts modeled from real searches. The Lite plan and above also include API and MCP access, so your team can pull Ahrefs data into AI assistants and internal tools without buying a separate API plan.

If you only need data on sites you own, the free Ahrefs Free plan gives you Site Audit and Site Explorer for any verified site, with up to 1,000 backlinks and 1,000 keywords visible at a time.

Choose Ahrefs when your content strategy starts with competitor research, you do link building or digital PR, or you want the largest dataset available for AI visibility research.

Pros

  • The larger backlink index of the two, updated every 15 to 30 minutes
  • A keyword database of 28.7 billion filtered keywords across 217 locations
  • API and MCP access on Lite and above
  • Ahrefs Free plan for sites you own

Cons

  • Rank Tracker updates weekly by default
  • Extra users cost $40 to $80 a month each, and Lite caps out at three users
  • Content Kit and Brand Radar AI are paid add-ons
  • Trustpilot reviewers complain about account lockouts and credit limits

SE Ranking vs Ahrefs: Features compared

Both tools cover the same core jobs, so the differences show up in data depth, usage limits, and what’s included in the base price. Here’s how they compare in the places content teams spend their time.

Ahrefs has the deeper backlink and competitor data

Ahrefs reports 35 trillion historical backlink records and 209.5 million domains after vetting, with its backlink index refreshed every 15 to 30 minutes. SE Ranking reports 2.9 trillion indexed backlinks and 428 million domains on its Backlink Checker page.

The two companies count differently, since Ahrefs filters its domain figure and SE Ranking doesn’t describe its figure that way, so the gap isn’t a clean multiple. Reviewers on both sides still agree that Ahrefs has the stronger link data. Even SE Ranking’s own comparison page credits Ahrefs with a strong reputation for its backlink checker.

Content teams feel this difference most in competitor research. A larger index is more likely to catch the handful of links a small B2B competitor has earned, which makes Ahrefs’ Top Pages and link reports more reliable when you’re working out why a rival’s comparison page outranks yours.

SE Ranking gives you more rank tracking for the money

Rank tracking is SE Ranking’s clearest win. The $129 Core plan tracks 2,000 keywords with daily updates. Ahrefs Lite, at the same price, tracks 750, and the Ahrefs help center says tracked keywords update weekly by default on all subscription plans. To track 2,000 keywords in Ahrefs, you need Standard at $249 a month.

Weekly data is fine for a quarterly business review. It’s less helpful when you’ve just refreshed 20 bottom-of-funnel pages and your VP asks on Thursday whether any of them moved. SE Ranking tracks Bing, Yahoo, and YouTube as well as Google, and it monitors more than 35 SERP features against the 19 listed on Ahrefs’ Rank Tracker page.

Bar chart comparing keywords tracked on entry plans: SE Ranking Core 2,000 daily and Ahrefs Lite 750 weekly
On their entry plans, SE Ranking tracks 2,000 keywords daily, while Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 with weekly updates by default.

If rank tracking is the main reason you’re comparing tools, the best rank tracking tools compared side by side include a few cheaper standalone options too.

Keyword research depends on your market

Ahrefs’ keyword database is much bigger, with 28.7 billion filtered keywords against SE Ranking’s 3.2 billion in Europe, 1.2 billion in North America, and 546 million in Asia. Both tools show search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, search intent, and SERP features, and both let you pull a competitor’s ranking keywords for gap analysis.

Database size tells you less than you’d think about your own niche, though. The quickest way to judge is to take 20 keywords you already rank for in Google Search Console and look them up in both tools. The one whose volumes and difficulty scores line up better with your real impressions is the better fit for your market.

Run that test on the commercial terms your buyers search, like comparison, alternatives, and pricing queries, because those are the keywords your plan will lean on. The process for finding bottom-of-funnel keywords is the same in either tool.

SE Ranking includes content tools, and Ahrefs charges for them

SE Ranking’s content marketing module comes with every plan, with 25 articles a month on Core and 50 on Growth. Ahrefs sells its Content Kit, which includes AI Content Helper, as an add-on from $99 a month.

Neither one will replace your editorial process. If your writers already use a content optimizer like Clearscope or Surfer, this difference won’t change much. If they don’t, SE Ranking’s included tools give them a starting point without adding another line item to your budget.

Ahrefs has the bigger AI dataset, and SE Ranking has the cheaper tracker

Both tools now track AI search, but they approach it differently. Ahrefs Brand Radar starts from its database of more than 449 million prompts across seven AI platforms, so you can research how your whole category shows up in AI answers without writing prompts yourself. Its AI Visibility Index costs $199 a month on top of your plan. Lite includes five tracked AI prompts, and Standard includes 10.

SE Ranking’s Core plan now includes 100 AI prompts tracked daily across five AI platforms. For more prompts, the AI Search add-on costs $89 a month, or $71.20 a month on annual billing. It tracks mentions, links, and competitors across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, and it comes with the SE Visible dashboard.

If you want to understand the market, Brand Radar is the stronger research tool. If you want to monitor the same set of buyer questions every week, SE Ranking gets you there for less than half the price. The roundup of AI visibility tools covers dedicated trackers if you need more than either offers.

Site audits are roughly even for a typical SaaS site

SE Ranking’s Core plan audits 250,000 pages a month, and Growth audits 2 million. Ahrefs Lite includes 100,000 crawl credits a month and Standard includes 500,000, and Ahrefs counts one credit for each HTML page it crawls.

For a B2B SaaS site with a few thousand pages, either allowance is plenty. The difference only shows up on very large sites or when you regularly audit competitors’ sites as well.

Ahrefs is ahead on API and AI-agent access

Ahrefs includes API and MCP access on Lite and every plan above it, which means you can connect Ahrefs data to AI assistants that support MCP, or to your own dashboards. SE Ranking sells API access as a $45-a-month add-on on annual billing. If your team is building AI-assisted research or reporting workflows, this favors Ahrefs.

Feature lists only go so far. These are the jobs content teams usually buy an SEO tool for, and the one that fits each job better.

Planning a competitive content strategy. Ahrefs is the better pick. When you’re deciding which topics to own, you’ll spend your time on competitors’ top pages, their referring domains, and the keywords they rank for that you don’t, which is Ahrefs’ strongest territory.

Reporting rankings to leadership. SE Ranking fits better here. Daily updates on 2,000 keywords make it easier to show whether a refresh or a new comparison page moved within the week, instead of waiting for the next weekly check.

Giving writers and editors their own logins. SE Ranking wins on cost. At $16 or more for each extra seat, you can give freelancers access without a budget conversation. On Ahrefs, each extra seat costs $40 to $80 a month, and Lite stops at three users.

Link building and digital PR. Ahrefs is the stronger tool. A bigger index finds more link prospects and shows who links to competitors’ research and data pages.

Agency or consultant client work. SE Ranking is built for it, with white-label reports and 30 client seats in the $69-a-month Agency Pack.

Tracking your brand in AI answers. It depends on the job. SE Ranking is the better value for monitoring a fixed set of prompts, while Ahrefs Brand Radar is better for category-wide research into who AI answers recommend.

What SE Ranking and Ahrefs users say in reviews

Review sites tell a more mixed story than either vendor’s marketing. On Capterra, as of September 2026, both tools score 4.7 out of 5, but the sub-scores split along the same lines as the features.

Capterra ratingSE RankingAhrefs
Overall4.7 (297 reviews)4.7 (585 reviews)
Ease of use4.64.5
Functionality4.64.7
Value for money4.74.2
Customer service4.74.5

Ahrefs’ lowest score is value for money, and that complaint comes up again and again in written reviews. Capterra reviewers mention the price for small businesses and freelancers, along with credits that run out faster than expected.

On Trustpilot, where reviews lean toward people who’ve had a problem, Ahrefs scores 2.1 out of 5 from 321 reviews. The recurring complaints are about accounts being blocked for suspicious activity, unclear credit usage, and slow support. The positive reviews are strong on the thing Ahrefs is known for, though. One reviewer called it one of the tools they’d “genuinely struggle to replace,” pointing to its competitor research and backlink data.

SE Ranking scores 4.3 out of 5 from 708 reviews on Trustpilot. Reviewers praise the interface and the price, and they often compare its cost favorably with Semrush. The complaints center on renewals, with some users reporting price increases or being moved to more expensive plans, and on occasional ranking accuracy issues. Capterra reviewers raise similar points and add that the backlink tools could be stronger.

The complaints line up with each company’s pricing model. Ahrefs users worry about cost and credits, and SE Ranking users worry about renewal terms. Before you sign an annual plan with either one, get the renewal price in writing.

What Reddit users say about SE Ranking vs Ahrefs

In a late-2025 r/bigseo thread from a marketer choosing an SEO platform for 2026, the replies split along the same lines as the review sites.

  • Ahrefs is the pick for link data. Several commenters named Ahrefs the most solid option for backlink analysis and site audits, and a long-time user of the bigger platforms said Ahrefs worked better for them on medium and large SEO projects.
  • SE Ranking wins on price and tracking. Commenters described SE Ranking as lighter but surprisingly good for rank tracking and reporting, and one said they’d switched from Ahrefs to cut costs without feeling they’d lost much.
  • The common complaint about SE Ranking is add-ons. One reply called its pricing model frustrating because so much is sold as an add-on, which matches the renewal complaints on Trustpilot.
  • Workflow decides it. The more detailed replies suggested choosing by the job you do most often, links and competitor research or tracking and reporting, rather than by feature count.

SE Ranking’s official account also replied in that thread, so weigh the praise with that in mind.

How pricing compares between SE Ranking and Ahrefs

Both tools start at $129 a month, so the sticker prices look identical. The difference shows up once you add people, keywords, and AI tracking.

PlanMonthly priceAnnual billingUsers includedTracked keywordsProjects
SE Ranking Core$129$103.20/month12,000 (daily)10

Ahrefs Advanced$449Up to 17% off1 (11 max)5,00050
Ahrefs Enterprise$1,499Annual onlyCustomCustomCustom

Prices come from the SE Ranking pricing page and the Ahrefs pricing page. SE Ranking also offers a custom Enterprise plan, and Ahrefs has a $29 Starter plan for occasional keyword and competitor lookups.

Here’s what that looks like for a few common team setups at monthly list prices.

Team setupSE RankingAhrefs
One user, 2,000 keywords$129 (Core)$249 (Standard)
Three users, 2,000 keywordsFrom $161 (Core plus two seats)$369 (Standard plus two users at $60)
Five users, 5,000 keywordsFrom $311 (Growth plus two seats)$769 (Advanced plus four users at $80)

Bar chart of monthly cost for SE Ranking and Ahrefs across four content team setups
Monthly list prices for common team setups.

SE Ranking lists extra seats “from $16,” so confirm the exact seat price for your plan before you budget. Even with some room for that, a three-person content team that wants rank tracking, AI visibility, and content tools pays roughly $400 a month more for Ahrefs at list price, which adds up to about $5,000 a year.

That gap is the real question to put to your team. If Ahrefs’ link and competitor data changes what you publish, it can be worth $5,000 a year. If your team mostly tracks rankings and researches keywords, it probably isn’t.

SE Ranking vs Ahrefs: Which one should you choose?

The two tools overlap on the basics, so pick the one that’s strongest at the job your team does most.

Choose SE Ranking if you’re a small content team, you report on rankings every week, and you want AI visibility tracking without paying $199 a month for it.

Choose Ahrefs if competitor links and top pages shape what you publish, you run link building or digital PR, or you want API and MCP access to build AI workflows on top of SEO data.

Some teams also combine tools. One Ahrefs Lite seat for competitor research plus SE Ranking Core with two extra seats for tracking and team access costs from $290 a month, which is still less than Ahrefs Standard with three users at $369. The guide to SEO tools for B2B teams covers what else belongs in that stack.

How to test SE Ranking and Ahrefs before you commit

If you’re still torn, run the same five tasks in both tools over two weeks, using SE Ranking’s 14-day trial and one month of Ahrefs Lite on monthly billing.

  1. Pull the top pages and referring domains for your three closest competitors, and note which tool finds links you recognize.
  2. Look up 20 keywords you already rank for, and compare each tool’s volume with your Google Search Console impressions.
  3. Track 200 keywords for a week, then check each tool’s positions against Search Console’s average position.
  4. Audit your own site and compare the issues each tool flags, and how easy they are to hand to a developer.
  5. Set up 10 prompts your buyers ask in ChatGPT and AI Overviews, and see which report you’d rather show your VP.

By the end, you’ll know which data your team trusts and which interface they’ll open without being reminded. That’s usually the tool worth paying for.

Whichever tool wins, its data is only as useful as the plan it feeds. If you’d like help turning keyword and competitor research into bottom-of-funnel content that ranks and gets cited in AI answers, that’s the work I do in the Pipeline Sprint.
